Women, Politics and Leadership in Public Sector: The Silent Power of Change Women's Representation in Public Sector: Why is it Important?

Gender equality is of great importance not only in terms of individual rights but also in terms of the quality of democracy and the comprehensiveness of public policies.

Women's representation in public sector is indispensable not only for the goal of freedom; but also for a more just, transparent and effective management approach. Women's participation in management results in different perspectives of decisions, stronger social policies and a more general order.

The Place of Women in the Public Sphere in Turkey

Although women in Türkiye appear to be better in public administration and politics compared to the past, they face many different barriers. As of 2024, the rate of women deputies in the Turkish Grand National Assembly is around 19%. The rate of women mayors in local governments is below 5%. Women's competence in high-level bureaucracy and decision-making bodies of public institutions is quite limited.

Why Does Female Leadership Make a Difference?

- Justice of Representation: While women form their society, they also deserve equal representation in decision-making mechanisms.

- Inclusive Policies: Under the leadership of the women's government, detailed social policies focus more on vital areas such as education, health, childcare and courageous struggle.

- Management Language and Style: Women leaders are trying to implement more understanding, empathetic and conciliatory management models.

- Role Model Effect: Women in the public sector become strong role models, especially for young girls.

Obstacles and Opportunities: What Should Be Done?

In order for women to have more space in the public sector and politics, it is critical to follow the following steps:

- Changing gender quotas

- Improving career programs and mentoring results

- Expanding gender-equal public policies

- Positive emergence of women leaders in media representation
